pearce ranchThe Pearce Ranch is located approximately 12 miles north of Broadus, MT in Powder River County, Montana.

The ranch consists of a combination of flood irrigated hay meadows and crop lands, lying along the west boundary of the Powder River; as well as a large block of mostly deeded rangeland and a excellent set of improvements. The ranch is currently stocked with 300 head of cows and has a potential of increasing the carrying capacity to 500 head. There is an excellent pipeline system and stock tanks. There are also several reservoirs to provide additional water.

Ranch Acreage is approximately 12,140 +/- acres. Deeded acres are 10,880 +/-, State Lease 640 acres, 145 aum's, and BLM 620 acres, 193 aum's.

Deeded acres consist of 8,426 acres of Native Grass, 374 acres of irrigated hay, 209 acres of idle irrigated hay, 1,845 acres of improved pasture/dryland hay and 26 acres of CRP.

Improvements include the main residence, a 1995 double wide mobile home 28x76 with wood deck and addition, 1248 sq. ft. ranch house built in 1966, 3 bedroom 1.5 baths, 24 x 32 shop, 36 x 80 Shed with dirt floor, 40 x 80 pole barn, 70 x 80 shed, 40 x 60 shed, 3 grain bins and miscellaneous storage buildings.

Irrigation water is pumped out of the Powder River with two diesel engines and Crissifulli pumps. The irrigated fields have been heavy leveled. Water is distributed by opening headgates or gated pipe. There are additional acres that could be irrigated on the river bottoms. Some of those fields have existing irrigation ditches to them.

pearce riverA total of 71 water right claims have been filed with DNRC. They include 1 domestic, 33 irrigation and 37 stock water rights. Irrigation rights include water from the Powder River and spreader rights from the various creeks.

There are over 3 miles of Powder River and cottonwood trees along the east side of the ranch. Both mule deer and whitetail deer are abundant in the river bottoms. Ducks, geese and turkeys are constantly observed between the river and hay fields. The upland native pastures are home to the mule deer, antelope and upland game birds.

With the outstanding improvements, irrigated bottoms, and well watered native pastures, the ranch allows for normal operations even in the driest years. The Powder River Cottonwood bottoms are any ranchers dream with great winter protection and crop production. The wildlife population will amaze any newcomers but are a common site to the owner. The ranch has great potential for increasing crop production on the river bottom lands.

It is no wonder the Indians fought to keep this land - it is very beautiful and full of game. The Battlefield Ranch is one of the most historic ranches in eastern Montana let alone one of the most beautiful with the Powder River as its' borders to the east offering lush river bottoms and wildlife habitat, then to the west rough cut scoria hills and grass valleys to add to the beauty & habitat of elk, deer, turkeys, antelop, grouse, doves and many more species of wildlife & predators.

A brief history of this ranch is as follows:

Custer and the 7th Cavalry had been in the area as early as 1874 attempting to persuade the Indians to comply with recently signed treaties. When those attempts failed, the Indians were given a final notice to be on the reservations no later than January 31, 1876. The messages were sent by trusted Indian runners.

Orders came February 7, 1876 to replace the Indians on the reservations.

Several columns of soldiers left Fort Fetterman & Fort Lincoln for Powder River and Yellowstone country. General Crook was in command.

Colonel Reynolds under Crook command was to attack the Chief Crazy Horse Camp and persuade the Indians to return to the reservation.

This column of 880 plus soldiers was attacked at night by the Indians on March 5, 1876 near Pumpkin Butte and Laramie Peak. As the column followed the Indians north up the Tongue River and Powder River, they saw many signs of hostility and daily would see smoke signals.

There were 700 to 1000 Indians in the camps on Powder River in 100 lodges prior to the attack by Reynolds on March 17, 1876.

The surprise attack sent Indians into rough rock & tree area taking positions to fire back on troops. Horses were driven away and lodges were destroyed and burned. Later Indians captured many of their horses and re-grouped to the west with Chief Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse in an attempt to protect themselves from soldiers and reservations.

This led to the Rosebud Battle on June 17, 1876 and then the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876.

Their trail north after the Battle of the Little Bighorn led to their eventual defeat from a lack of ammunition, food and fatigue. the Reynolds Battle was the beginning of the end.
